Abstract
Astragali Radix(Huangqi, Hwanggi) is a root of Astragalus membranaceus and a kind of oriental medicine which has known to have a tonic effect for general health. To evaluate the systematic effects of Astragali Radix on the immune system, the author examined the effect on the innate and specific immunities in the mouse.
As the results, the administration of Astragali Radix enhanced the phagocytic functions of the murine peritoneal macrophages in vivo and in vitro. And the herb increased such reactive oxygen intermediates as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide formations from macrophages in vivo and in vitro. Also it enhanced antibodies(hemagglutinin and hemolysin) forming capacities and increased the number of the rosette forming cells of the spleen.
The water extract adminstration of Astragali Radix caused the changes in the ratio of helper and suppressor T cells by increasing CD4+ T cell and decreasing CD8+ T cells.
And the water extract of the herb enhanced the allogenic immune response and promoted the lymphocyte proliferative activity.
The above results demonstrate that Astragali Radix has enhancing effects on the immunocyte functions. And also these facts offer a basis that Astragali Radix is used as a biological response modifiers in the disease from deficiency of defence mechanism and might prevent the host from microbial infections.
